The Power Of The Brow

It’s official: we’re living in the Eyebrow Era. You don’t have to search the #onfleek hashtag to know that the once-overlooked (and over-tweezed) facial feature is now the star of the show. And that’s as it should be, because the difference a well-groomed, well-shaped, ultra-defined brow makes can truly take your look to the next level. On the flip side, of course, sparse or stray hairs, less-than-perfect arches or excessively pale color may be doing your look a major disservice. That’s why it’s crucial to enlist a professional who combines technical skills with a well-honed aesthetic sense. Threading artist and aesthetician Elsa Vazquez is one such master. Here’s her advice for achieving bold, beautiful brows.

Shape it up

Because eyebrows often thin with age, maintaining fuller brows can help shave years off your appearance. Luckily for us, they’re also seriously trending. That being said, it’s doesn’t have to be all about adding to brows with powders and hair growth serums. Instead, you can focus on creating your ideal brow by removing the hair you already have to create a perfect arch.

When it comes to hair removal, Elsa says many of her clients prefer threading to waxing, because it’s both gentler and more precise. “Threading doesn’t cause any type of reaction to the skin, and it also lasts a little longer than waxing,” Elsa says, who joined the Boeau Belle team about a year and a half ago. “It also removes hair at the root, so it grows back more slowly and less coarse.”

To thread eyebrows, Elsa simply rolls a few hairs between two twisted lengths of string and pulls them out. “It’s a slower process than waxing, about 10-15 minutes, because we shape and design the eyebrow hair by hair,” she says. Sensation-wise, it’s similar to tweezing. But because threading does exfoliate the skin, Elsa recommends that her clients cleanse, tone and moisturize the eyebrow area when they get home.

A perfect tint

Once the perfect shape has been achieved, it’s time to think about hue. Tinting can make eyebrows seem fuller and darker, or it can be used to ensure your brow shade better coordinates with your hair color.

“Lots of ladies have light eyebrows and want to make them look a little darker and more defined,” Elsa says. “When that happens, we’ll have a quick consultation to help them achieve a flattering shade more aligned with what they’re looking for.”

In fact, your eyelashes can be tinted using the same process. And as long as you make sure not to rub your eyebrows or lashes when you wash them, your results should last two to three weeks. Speaking of lashes…

Don’t leave out lashes!

Brows might be the leading lady when it comes to framing your eyes, but eyelashes definitely play a supporting role. To add length, volume and curl to lashes, consider extensions, which last two to four weeks. At that point, it’s time for a refill or for removal. Whatever you decide (and no matter how tempting it may be), don’t rip the extensions out yourself—you can risk pulling out your real lashes along with them. “As the eyelashes grow, it’s normal for the extensions to begin to fall out,” Elsa says. “So if you see a little gap, you can get a refill or go to the salon and have them removed.”

Don’t be surprised if you get hooked on eyelash extensions and eyebrow threading, though. When your brows and lashes are on point, you don’t need much else to bring out your special features. You’ll be amazed by how much less time you spend getting ready every morning—and you’ll love what you see in the mirror all day long.
